Science Week - Maths

Here is a class charter that the members of Hawthorn created together. They discussed the classroom and school and how the environments should be safe and happy places, and they then talked about different ways that we could work together to make this happen. For each idea, the children then explained their answers and for some extended them. Some answers even needed extra bits noting. For example, we know that we don’t run in class, but if it is P.E. then that is okay.

Once we had discussed, explained and agreed to the new rules, the class then signed their names to say that they would try their hardest to follow them. We are a team, so we also agreed to help each other remember the rules if we ever noticed that someone had forgotten one of them.

Our Weekly Timetable

We do P.E. twice a week: Wednesday and Thursday. The children need their kit in school for this. If they do not have their kit then they miss a chunk of their learning.

Kit:

  • Black shorts or jogging bottoms
  • A white t-shirt
  • Appropriate footwear
  • No earrings – silicone ones can be worn

The children should bring a full water bottle in each day. These can be topped up in class.

Reading books will be changed and sent home each Wednesday. The book sent home should have been read at least three times by the child. This is a chance for them to build their fluency with a text that is familiar to them.

Spellings/sounds will be sent home each Friday. These can be recorded in different ways. We have provided a green book for this purpose, but it does not have to be done in these.

Homework will be set every two weeks. This should lend itself to pre-teaching or post-teaching some of the content that will be taught over the half term.

Important things to note:

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Kit is to be kept in school for the whole half term.

Phonics and Reading

We follow the Little Wandle scheme. We read every day, and we run two phonics lessons each day. The first recaps on our known graphemes and words, and then we learn our new grapheme of the day. This knowledge is then tested with the introduction of new words. Our second phonics lesson secures this knowledge by repeating our learning, but at a faster pace.

Literacy

In literacy we will focus on two texts. The first being Rapunzel. The second book will be Look Inside a Castle.

The books will be used to develop the children’s sentence writing and will build up their ideas alongside The Writing Framework.

We will be using our phonics knowledge in our writing as well as ensuring we are using our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We will go over nouns, verbs and adjectives, and how these will ensure our writing is interesting and makes sense.

We will be adding new concepts into our writing. We will begin to use question marks in our work, and we will also be developing our dictated sentence writing skills, alongside our revision and editing skills.

Maths

In maths we follow the White rose scheme of work. This term we will be focussing on place value within addition and subtraction within 20 before moving on to place value within 50. Please see the links for additional assistance: https://whiteroseeducation.com/parent-pupil-resources/maths/home-learning?year=year-1-new

Alongside the scheme we will also teach Mastering Number. This is to assist with fluency and the skill of subitising. We use concrete resources such as Reknreks to support with learning.

Computing

The focus in computing is on Programming Moving robots and Beebots. This is a hands-on way to investigate coding, sequencing and directional skills.

History

In history, we will be looking at castles. The children will:

1-Understand where Skipton Castle is located in time and place.

2-Understand why Skipton Castle was built and how its design reflects this.

3-To know at least 5 typical features of the exterior of a medieval castle.

4- To know that the inside of Skipton Castle was very different from a modern home.

5- Understand what life was like in a medieval castle and some of the jobs that people would have had.

6- Know some key facts about Skipton Castle.

Science

In science, we will continue to focus on lifecycles and plants. This will include identifying and naming plants, labelling their parts and understanding their functions, and developing an understanding of lifecycles.

PSHE

In PSHE, the topic will be focussing on: Rights and responsibilities

Taking care of things:

Myself

My money

My environment

Physical Education

In PE, we will have two different focuses: invasion games and gymnastics.

Please remember that we have PE on a Wednesday and Thursday. The children can keep their kits in school for the entire half term.
